Street Art Utopia
INTRODUCTION
Doing a rhetorical analysis on a website is fairly easy but you have to
know the three rhetorical devices, which are ethos, pathos and logos. Plus you
have to decide who the website is aimed for or in other words the audience.
Ethos refers to the trustworthiness or credibility of the
writer or speaker, such as correct spelling and sources. Pathos is associated
with the emotional or motivational appeals, vivid language, emotional language
and numerous sensory details. Logos means persuading by the use of reasoning.
Therefore when we analyzed www.streetartutopia.com all three devices were easy to
find.
AUDIENCE
Street art utopia is filled with a lot of
pictures and paintings of a variety of things. We decided that the main audience
for this website would be street artists, photographers, designers and creative,
artistic people. My classmate had explained why these people would be who the website
is aimed for very well. Street artists make most of the art that is on the
website. Photographers are the ones who take the photos of the art but as my classmate
had said they have to take it at a certain angle and a certain way or else the
art wont be able to be appreciated as well as it should be. Designers and
creative, artistic people understand what has been painted or drawn and have a
different perspective to it than most people.
ETHOS
The ethical appeal of the website was very easy
to find. My classmate explained that the site is updated at least every week so that
when you visit it you see something new. Artists are mentioned and credited for
their work posted in the site and even have links to them such as to the artist
or photographers facebook or own website. She also stated that there is no bias
on the website, the art depends on the opinion of the artist or in the other
words the eye of the beholder.
PATHOS
For pathos I had explained how the site is kept
simple for the emphasis of the art. For example if you go into the site you will
notice how there is hardly any color and there is a lot of white space so the
viewer can keep focus on the art. The website uses simple text and there are few
advertisements. The website is based around the photographs and art so therefore
there is little to no text, except for either the title of the art and for the
references. The way the viewer or audience feels depends on how she or he views
the art or photograph. Everyone who views the site and sees the art and
photography will have different thoughts toward it hence experiencing different
emotion.
LOGOS
For logos my classmate had explained how the photographs
and art are the centerpiece of the websites. Also the website sticks to
scrolling as the main navigation and writing is consistent among all photographs
and art, meaning every picture has a caption or a source it doesn’t vary between
each.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion the street utopia website is pretty
self-explanatory on the rhetorical devices. The website is clear and sticks to
what it wants to show the viewer, which is one of the reasons we chose to
analyze this website. We worked together to decide the audience, ethos, pathos
and logos instead of assigning one to each of us. That way all three of us had
the knowledge of each device and how it was used on the website. Personally I
did not have a problem with the website and wouldn’t change a thing on it. Its
simple and easy to navigate, just like most people like it, or at least I
do.
